# Margin and markup calculator facts

The browser calculator accepts a non-negative cost, a non-negative percentage and either Margin or Markup mode. It calculates selling price, profit and the equivalent percentage.

## Formulas

- Profit = selling price − cost.
- Margin (%) = profit ÷ selling price × 100.
- Markup (%) = profit ÷ cost × 100.
- Selling price from margin = cost ÷ (1 − margin ÷ 100).
- Selling price from markup = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100).

## Worked examples

For cost 100 and margin 35%, selling price rounds to 153.85, profit to 53.85 and equivalent markup to 53.85%. For cost 100 and markup 35%, selling price is 135.00, profit is 35.00 and equivalent margin rounds to 25.93%.

## Limits and rounding

Margin must be below 100%; markup may exceed 100%. Negative values, malformed decimal input, scientific notation and separators are rejected. Cost accepts up to 12 integer digits and 6 fractional digits; percentage up to 6 integer digits and 6 fractional digits. Input uses a full stop for decimals. Both zero cost and zero percentage return zeros. Zero cost with a positive percentage is rejected because markup is undefined.

Currency codes: AUD, USD, GBP, EUR, NZD, CAD, JPY, SGD. Currency selection labels values; it never converts amounts or fetches exchange rates. Monetary display uses 2 decimal places except JPY, which uses 0. Percentages display 2 places; display rounding is half-up. Calculations use decimal arithmetic with 80 significant digits internally.

Taxes, fees, discounts and currency conversion are not included. This is a pricing estimate, not accounting advice. Entered figures remain in the open browser page; no figures are included in these resources.
